Byway Open the app

Changelog

What’s new and improved across Byway.

  • New

Places are getting their own map icons — a bed for a hotel, a train for a station, a bag for a shop — instead of one shared icon per category. More arrive as the map data refreshes.

  • New

Pick a colour for your places as well as an icon or emoji — the two are now independent, so you can keep the glyph and change the tint.

  • New

A place's card, its picker row and the Places table now say what a place is — "Hotel", "Coffee Shop" — instead of the broad category it files under.

  • New

Split a visit in two from its edit window — pick a place and set the times for each half.

  • Fixed

Adding a passkey now asks for vault access in the same prompt that creates it, and offers an Enable vault access retry instead of silently settling for sign-in only.

  • Fixed

Enable vault access now opens your passkey provider's own prompt instead of the browser's phone-or-security-key picker.

  • Fixed

You can now add passkeys without replacing your password, and see which passkeys can unlock your vault.

  • Fixed

The Stats tiles now agree with their counts, so a single country reads "1 Country" rather than "1 Countries".

  • New

Choose Metric or Imperial in Settings — distances across your timeline, trips and stats now follow your choice, starting from your browser's region.

  • Fixed

Opening Trips no longer hides trips saved on another device.

  • New

Admin: a Feature Flags tab for deciding who can see a pre-release feature, and a Beta Tester role to point those rules at.

  • Fixed

Deleting an account from the admin screen now asks you to type the account's email address (pasting is refused) and then confirm once more, so a single misclick can no longer destroy an account.

  • New

Byway's privacy policy and support pages are now on the site, at byway.place/privacy/ and byway.place/support/.

  • New

Travelled by bus? Pick “By bus” from a journey's mode menu, alongside “By train”.

  • Fixed

Short trips are no longer shown as runs — a burst of speed over a minute or two is usually just the GPS catching up, so trips under three minutes stay walks.

  • Fixed

A travel leg whose mode you set yourself no longer draws a dotted underline under its caption.

  • Fixed

The travel mode picker's "Let Byway decide" is now called "Automatic".

  • New

Got somewhere by train? Pick how you travelled from the chevron on any journey in the timeline.

  • New

An Underground or train journey between two walks is now shown as a train, not left blank.

  • New

An overground train journey now shows as a train rather than as driving.

  • Fixed

The line for travel in progress is no longer dashed and oversized on the timeline map — it now matches the recorded track's weight and glows gently to mark it as happening now.

  • Fixed

A journey that mixed walking with a train or Underground ride no longer shows up as a run.

  • Fixed

An imported workout route no longer draws as a spray of spikes back to wherever the recording device was — the map shows the route actually taken.

  • Fixed

A large timeline update no longer stops the web app absorbing your visits, or leaves a moved visit missing.

  • Fixed

Publishing now waits and retries when the encrypted relay is temporarily rate-limited.

  • Fixed

App lock now keeps your Secret Key out of this browser's storage as well as your data key, so unlocking without your passkey asks for the Secret Key from your Recovery Kit rather than your password.

  • New

The changelog now explains what the Byway CLI is and where to get it.

  • Fixed

The My Data visits table marks undated visits instead of printing times the rest of the app declines to state.

  • Fixed

A visit whose times were never recorded now sits on the timeline where its data actually is, rather than hours later.

  • Fixed

An interrupted store upgrade no longer leaves the app unable to open its local data.

  • Fixed

Selecting a journey that turns out to be an offline gap no longer leaves a stray line across the map.

  • Fixed

An offline stretch on the timeline now starts where your recorded data actually stopped, so the row covers the whole gap.

  • New

Visits detected from sparse data now show without times and stay out of duration stats; gaps in recording show as "Offline".

  • New

Byway has a new icon, and it now stays sharp in the toolbar and on your home screen at every size.

  • Fixed

The Map tab breaks the track at an offline window, matching the Timeline map.

  • Fixed

The Byway icon in the toolbar now loads — it was pointing at a file that never made it into the release.

  • New

Byway has a new look — a new app icon and a softer green palette drawn from it.

  • Fixed

A place's own subtitle now appears wherever its category used to: in the place picker's rows, and in the Places table.

  • Fixed

Selecting a multi-day visit now outlines the whole stay as one box, and an ongoing visit gets its own highlight rather than the selection colour.

  • Fixed

A stay you're still on is now outlined all the way around, even when it spans more than one day.

  • Fixed

Stats and the timeline open far faster on a long history — the app no longer rebuilds your whole visit history once per card and once per page.

  • Fixed

The map draws the whole of a long date range again — its route used to stop partway through.

  • Fixed

The map redraws faster while scrolling a long date range.

  • New

Travel between places now shows a simple symbol for how you got there — walking, running, cycling, driving or flying — matching the iOS app instead of an emoji.

  • New

You can now give a place your own subtitle — the line under its name on the timeline — and custom places get one for the first time.

  • New

Byway now has a home page at byway.place, with the app at app.byway.place. The Encryption and Changelog pages share its header, so the three read as one site.

  • Fixed

The Secret Key field now appears with the rest of the sign-in form on a new device, instead of sliding in after you've typed your email.

  • Fixed

Adding a note to a visit no longer locks its arrival and departure times, or rounds them to the nearest minute.

  • New

The timeline is redesigned around day sections: every day gets a pinned header with a summary of what happened on it, cards carry a place icon and a "duration · category" line, travel between places is a pill on a dotted trail, and a stay that runs over midnight now spans those days as one connected object.

  • Fixed

Signing in as a different account on a browser that was last used for another one now works instead of failing with an unexplained error.

  • Fixed

New passwords now need at least 8 characters as well as enough variety, and the rule is identical on iOS — a password accepted on one Byway app is accepted on the other.

  • Fixed

You can now unlock your vault with your Secret Key alone — no password needed — and a new browser is no longer asked for both at once.

  • New

Travel on the timeline now shows how you got there — walking, running, cycling, driving or flying.

  • New

The place icon picker now offers your recent emoji and a proper emoji picker instead of a text field.

  • Fixed

Timeline visits now grow with how long you spent there, so a quick errand and an afternoon with friends no longer look the same. Short visits take up less room, and each visit's duration lines up with its arrival time.

  • Fixed

Sync now reclaims unused encrypted uploads and reports when your relay storage limit has been reached.

  • Fixed

Finishing an invite link now sets up your encrypted vault and shows your Secret Key to save, the same as signing up yourself.

  • Fixed

Settings now shows a single Devices list. Removing or revoking a device signs it out and cuts off its access — there's no separate API Keys list to remember.

  • New

You can restore the locations from a full backup: pick the .json file in Settings and they're added to your account and synced to your other devices.

  • New

Full JSON backups are available again, and now include your visits rather than only your points.

  • Fixed

Suggested Trips are generated from your visits again, including any you have renamed, merged or deleted.

  • Fixed

The browser edit pipeline check now exercises a place assignment through the durable op queue, matching how edits actually work.

  • New

The timeline now shows a grey "Recorder Offline" bar when your recording device hasn't reported for over 12 hours, instead of silently stretching your current visit.

  • Fixed

Travel between visits is rebuilt once after this update, so the map may take a moment to draw routes the first time you open it.

  • New

The changelog now has separate Web, iOS and Server tabs, and each section lists new features before fixes.

  • New

The public changelog now shows Byway's web, server, and iOS changes in one place.

  • Fixed

Sync progress now appears at the top of the timeline instead of covering the map.

  • New

Admin cell generation can resume an interrupted publication: failed and cancelled runs get a Resume action, and there is a dialog for entering a publication id directly.

  • New

Place tagging now follows the published cell manifest, so unchanged cells are reused from the browser cache instead of being refetched after a data refresh.

  • Fixed

The timeline now shows your current travel while you are between visits, including its route on the map.

  • Fixed

Byway now asks for confirmation before recomputing visits.

  • New

A public page at byway.place/e2ee explaining how your data is encrypted.

  • Fixed

The My Data points table now shows newest points first by default.

  • Fixed

New passkeys can now unlock your vault, not just sign you in.

  • Fixed

Signing in after upgrading your account on another device no longer shows the old unlock screen.

  • Fixed

Signing in and unlocking Byway now ask for less. Your Secret Key is remembered on a device you've signed in on, so locking and coming back needs only your password — and when the key is needed, the field is shown up front instead of appearing after a failed attempt.

  • Fixed

Signing in with a passkey now unlocks your vault in one step, and never asks for a password you don't have.

  • Fixed

Signing out and straight back in no longer leaves syncing broken until you reload.

  • Fixed

Settings operations that ask for your account password — revealing your Secret Key, switching to passkey sign-in — no longer reject the correct password.

  • New

Flights now draw a curved great-circle path on the map instead of a straight line.

  • Fixed

Visits you've tagged with a place now appear on the map at the place's location, with the trail bending in to meet it.

  • New

Settings now shows the app version and build at the bottom.

  • Fixed

Stats top-countries/cities counts are easier to read — fixed low-contrast text over the ranking bars in light mode.

  • Fixed

Deleting a visit now sticks — some visits (from imported history) could reappear right after you deleted them.
