Places are getting their own map icons — a bed for a hotel, a train for a station, a bag for a shop — instead of one shared icon per category. More arrive as the map data refreshes.

Pick a colour for your places as well as an icon or emoji — the two are now independent, so you can keep the glyph and change the tint.

A place's card, its picker row and the Places table now say what a place is — "Hotel", "Coffee Shop" — instead of the broad category it files under.

Split a visit in two from its edit window — pick a place and set the times for each half.

The sidebar has a cleaner look: one list of destinations, and Tracking is now a live status card pinned to the bottom that shows what your tracker is doing at a glance. On a device you've turned tracking off for, the card stays out of the way entirely.

Tap a place — on the Stats screen, or from a visit's card — to see everything about it: time spent, visit count, your average and longest stay, when you first went, and the full list of visits.

Settings has been reorganised: your account, devices and sync now sit at the top, and a new Help & Support section brings together Support, Debug Settings and About Byway.

There's a new Support screen: email support directly from the app, optionally with your logs attached, and turn on Shake to Send Feedback to report a problem with a screenshot from any screen. Attached logs have your locations removed by default.

The map on a place's screen can now be panned and zoomed, with a Recenter button to snap back to the place.

If your watch recorded an outdoor workout while your phone was somewhere else, Byway can now offer to import the route into your timeline. Turn on "Offer to Import Outdoor Workouts" in Tracking Settings.

Got somewhere by train? Long-press a journey on the timeline to say how you travelled.

Travelled by bus? Long-press a journey and tell Byway — “By bus” now sits alongside “By train” in the list of ways you got there.

Shaking your device to send feedback now gives you a quick buzz, so you know Byway heard the shake.

Passwords you create in Byway are now saved against byway.place, so your password manager offers them when you sign in on the web too.

You can now create a Byway account right in the app — no invite link needed.

Create an account with just a passkey — Face ID signs you in and unlocks your history, with no password to choose or forget. Pick Passkey or Password on the Create account screen.

Try Byway before signing up: the new Demo Mode button on the welcome screen opens the whole app over a month of invented history — a student's month in Edinburgh, with trips to Glasgow and London. Nothing is recorded, your photos are never read, and the demo is gone the next time you open Byway.

Setting up a new device now turns the location tracker on for you, unless another of your devices is already recording.

Scan the QR code on your printed Recovery Kit to fill in your Secret Key, instead of typing all 52 characters. The code no longer appears on the Recovery Kit screen itself, where there was nothing to scan it with.

The timeline now says what Byway is doing while it waits for your first visit, and the map follows you until there is something to show. 636

Choose Metric or Imperial in Settings — distances across your timeline, trips and stats now follow your choice, starting from your device's region.

Trips can now be shared as a looping GIF. On the share sheet's Video tab, Output offers HD Video, 4K Video or GIF — for the places that autoplay a GIF but not a video.

The share sheet is redesigned: pick a theme, format and quality, choose which places and stats appear, and turn labels, pins and photos on or off.

Poster photos can now be arranged by hand: tap the preview in the share sheet to open it full screen, then drag a photo to move it, or tap it and pinch or twist to resize and rotate. Tap it again to choose a square or original crop. Up to eight photos, raised from four.

The Tracking screen now tells you when Byway's location access is set to "While Using the App" and explains why it needs "Always" — with a shortcut to the right place in Settings.

Split a visit in two from its edit screen — pick a place and set the times for each half.

You can now sign out from the unlock and restore screens, so an account you can't unlock is no longer a dead end you can't leave — even by reinstalling.

Tapping a visit on the timeline now opens an expanded detail view over the list, showing when you arrived and left, how long you stayed, your photos from the visit and any notes. Drag it down or tap the close button to go back to the timeline; the per-card edit pencil is gone, with Edit now inside the detail view. The same applies to the timeline inside a trip.

A device you remove from Settings is now signed out properly: it loses access straight away, and if it comes back online it clears the data it downloaded instead of quietly failing to sync.

The app no longer freezes or stutters shortly after launch — syncing and place tagging now run in the background instead of blocking the interface.

Sign-up now judges password strength the same way the web app does, so a password accepted here won't be refused there.

Updating no longer sends a signed-in device back to the unlock screen when its saved account details were in an older format.

A place name applied to the visit you're currently at now reaches your other devices straight away, instead of waiting until the recording device next uploaded points.

Recalculating travel after new points is fast again instead of getting slower the longer the app is installed.

Recording no longer rewrites the entire travel history every time a location is recorded, which was costing about a second and a half of work every few seconds while moving.

If creating your account fails because the connection dropped, tapping Create account again now finishes the job rather than reporting that your email is already taken.

A WiFi sign-in page or a company proxy can no longer sign you out of Byway: only a rejection from Byway's own servers does.

Signing out now clears everything it says it does: the app no longer keeps the previous account's data when the server rejects a stale credential, the Recovery Kit PDF is deleted rather than left on the device, and app-lock no longer carries over to the next person to sign in.

A background wake no longer records a stale or wildly inaccurate location as a real point — Byway was occasionally planting a fix hundreds of metres away, and then padding the gap around it.

A geofence exit that turns out to be a false alarm is now dismissed rather than waking full tracking for nothing, which saves battery when your phone is sitting still indoors.

Byway can no longer get stuck with GPS running at full power after checking whether you have started moving — a rare stall that quietly drained the battery while the app looked like it was in Power-Saver.

Byway no longer parks in Power-Saver when location access is set to "While Using the App" — iOS never delivers the geofence, significant-location or visit events that mode depends on, so the app could stop recording and then fill the gap in with a stay you had already left.

Splitting a visit no longer overwrites a time you set yourself, or closes a visit that is still running.

Signing in with your password and Secret Key now happens in the app instead of a web page, with a scanner for the QR code on your Recovery Kit.
